Caturday – Wonton

In 2017, I started talking about wanting a cat. I was stalking shelter websites, looking at all the cats, struggling to make a decision. There were just so many and I wanted to save them all.

I was telling a friend about how I wanted a cat, he said his girlfriend and him had just found one wandering around outside a Chinese food restaurant. They named her Wonton, but had big dogs and she was struggling to get along with them.

After talking it over with Nick, we took in Wonton and chose to keep her name as it was because it suited her. She was my dumpling and was found outside a Chinese food place, apropos, don’t you think?

It took time to get her to warm up to us, and she’s still not a “lap cat”. She’ll lie next to me, just not on me. She also can’t stand to be picked up, it’s like it offends her sensibilities. She was my only cat for the first year she lived here, and was spoiled relentlessly because of it. She likes scratches behind the ears and above the tail, the rest of her body is off limits.

Wonton is shy around other cats, she’s just not the friendly type. We started calling her Queen far before any other cats came into the house, she definitely gives off “royal” energy. She behaves as if she’s above everyone and everything, and we should all cater to her every whim.

She’s also still super playful after all these years, she still gets all worked up when we play “hide the stick”. This usually involves a plastic stick repurposed from mini blinds being pushed under a pillow to peek out the other side. Her hunting instincts remain top notch, the way she goes after a pillow! 🤣

Wonton mainly stays in Nick’s room, but sometimes likes to go outside with me when I’m gardening. She must inspect my work, can’t have any slackers under her watch. 😉 Her favorite food is Delectables, but she won’t turn down a piece of rare salmon either.

Yes, on holidays, I feed my cats “people food”. Why shouldn’t they get something special?

Wonton does get along with Bonnie, who I’ll discuss in next week’s Caturday.
